4-Day Amboseli & Tsavo West Safari

There's one photograph every safari traveller wants: a herd of elephants ambling across open grassland with the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them. This 4-day itinerary is built to get you exactly that shot, and then takes you on to a second, very different park so your short trip still covers real ground.

In Amboseli, you'll spend two full days with some of Kenya's largest and most photogenic elephant herds, set against what is consistently rated one of the best views of Kilimanjaro anywhere in Africa. From there, you'll head to Tsavo West, where volcanic hills, lava flows and the crystal-clear waters of Mzima Springs offer a complete change of scenery and a fresh set of wildlife encounters.

It's a compact itinerary, but a genuinely well-rounded one — big-tusker elephants and iconic mountain views, followed by dramatic volcanic landscapes, all within four unhurried days.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Nairobi → Amboseli~240 km · ~4 hrsOvernight: Amboseli

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

You'll depart Nairobi in the morning for the roughly 240 km, 4-hour drive to Amboseli National Park, with Mount Kilimanjaro coming into view as you approach. After lunch and check-in at your lodge or camp, you'll head out for an afternoon game drive across the park's open plains and swamps, home to some of the largest 'big tusker' elephants left in Africa. Overnight in Amboseli, full board.

Day 2: Full Day Amboseli Game Drives

You'll spend the day exploring Amboseli's swamps, dried lake bed and acacia woodland, tracking elephant herds, buffalo, giraffe and — with a bit of luck — lion and cheetah, all set against Kilimanjaro's backdrop on clear mornings. Your driver-guide will position you for the classic 'elephants with Kilimanjaro' photograph that Amboseli is famous for. Overnight in Amboseli, full board.

Day 3: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park

After breakfast, you'll drive to Tsavo West National Park, around 150 km taking 2.5-3 hours. In the afternoon, you'll visit Mzima Springs, a crystal-clear natural spring where hippos and crocodiles can be viewed from a partially submerged underwater chamber, before an afternoon game drive through the park's volcanic hills and woodland. Overnight in Tsavo West, full board.

Trip Planning Guide

The dry seasons (June to October and January to February) give the clearest Kilimanjaro views (usually best at dawn, before cloud builds through the day) and the easiest game viewing as wildlife gathers around Amboseli's swamps. The green season (November, March-May) offers lush scenery but a higher chance of cloud obscuring the mountain.

  • Neutral-toned, lightweight clothing plus a warm layer for cool early mornings
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen — Amboseli's open plains offer little shade
  • A camera with a wide lens for mountain-and-wildlife shots, plus a zoom for closer wildlife
  • Dust-friendly footwear and clothing for Tsavo's red-dust terrain

Kilimanjaro is most often visible in the early morning before clouds build up later in the day, so your driver-guide will prioritise sunrise and mid-morning game drives on your Amboseli days to maximise your chances of a clear mountain view.

This 4-day itinerary pairs naturally with a Masai Mara safari earlier or later in your trip, or can be extended into our 4-Day Tsavo East & West Safari if you'd like more time in the Tsavo ecosystem specifically.
