Embark on an extraordinary 3-day Masai Mara safari
3 Days Masai Mara Safari
If you only have a few days to spare, this 3 Days Masai Mara Safari is the fastest way to experience Kenya's most famous wildlife destination without feeling rushed. Departing Nairobi, you'll travel overland through the dramatic Great Rift Valley straight into the Masai Mara National Reserve — home to the highest concentration of lion prides in Kenya, resident cheetah and leopard, elephant herds, giraffe, buffalo and, on a good day, black rhino.
This itinerary is built around two full game-viewing sessions in the Mara, with plenty of time on the savannah at dawn and dusk when predators are most active. Depending on when you travel, you may also witness the Mara River crossings during the Great Wildebeest Migration (typically July through October), when over a million wildebeest and zebra move north from the Serengeti.
Beyond the wildlife, the Masai Mara is also home to the Maasai people, and this safari offers the option to visit a traditional Maasai village (boma) to learn about their customs, beadwork and cattle-herding way of life, as well as an optional early-morning hot air balloon safari drifting silently over the plains.
Both nights of this safari are spent in comfortable, full-board tented camps in the Mara, with all park entrance fees, 4x4 game drives and an experienced English-speaking driver-guide included throughout — a compact, high-impact Kenya safari for travelers short on time, from just $1,190 per person sharing.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve
Your 3 days Masai Mara safari begins with an early morning pick-up in Nairobi for the scenic overland drive southwest through the Great Rift Valley. The tarmac road runs via Mai Mahiu and the market town of Narok, with a stop at a Rift Valley viewpoint for photos, before the final stretch into the Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch at camp, then head straight out on your first Masai Mara game drive in your private 4x4 — an introduction to the reserve's resident lion prides, elephant herds, giraffe, topi and plains game that make the Mara Kenya's premier Big Five safari destination. Dinner and overnight at Basecamp Masai Mara / Zebra Plains Mara Camp.
Full Day in the Masai Mara
A full day dedicated entirely to game viewing in the Masai Mara, one of the highest concentrations of predators anywhere in Africa. After an early breakfast, set out on a morning game drive across the open savannah — prime time to find lion and cheetah on the hunt. Return to camp to relax over lunch, with the option to head out for a full day of game viewing with a picnic lunch on the plains instead. Rise before dawn for an optional hot air balloon safari over the Mara (approximately $450 per person) followed by a champagne bush breakfast, or spend the morning visiting a local Maasai village to learn about Maasai culture, traditional dress and cattle-herding life. In the afternoon, head back out tracking elephant, buffalo, hippo pods and, season permitting, migrating wildebeest and zebra, before your driver-guide positions the vehicle for sundowners as the light turns gold. Dinner and overnight at Basecamp Masai Mara / Zebra Plains Mara Camp.
Masai Mara to Nairobi
Set out for one final early morning game drive in the Masai Mara, making the most of the soft morning light for last photographs and a chance encounter with big cats before they settle down for the day. Return to camp for breakfast and check-out, then begin the drive back to Nairobi via Narok and the Great Rift Valley. Arrive back in Nairobi in the early afternoon, in good time for an onward flight connection or drop-off at your Nairobi hotel — bringing your 3 Days Masai Mara Safari to a close.

Trip Planning Guide
Even in just three days, the Masai Mara consistently delivers some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa. Highlights typically include:
- The Big Five: Lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo and, with luck, black rhino.
- The Great Wildebeest Migration (July–October): Wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River in one of the world's most dramatic wildlife spectacles.
- Cheetah and hyena: The Masai Mara supports some of the highest predator densities in Africa alongside its resident lion prides.
- Giraffe, zebra, hippo and plains game: Maasai giraffe, Burchell's zebra, hippo pods in the Mara River, plus topi, impala, warthog and eland.
- Maasai culture: An optional visit to a traditional Maasai village to learn about local customs, beadwork and cattle-herding traditions.
- Hot air balloon safari: An optional dawn flight over the plains, followed by a champagne bush breakfast.
- Visa & entry requirements: Most nationalities need a Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), applied for online before departure.
- Health & vaccinations: A yellow fever certificate is required only if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Malaria is present in the Mara, so anti-malarial medication and repellent are strongly recommended.
- Currency & payments: The Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the local currency; US Dollars are widely accepted at camps for extras, tips and souvenirs.
- Park entry fees: All Masai Mara National Reserve entrance fees are included in your package price.
- Road conditions: Roads are a mix of tarmac and murram (graded dirt); our 4x4 vehicles with pop-up roofs are built for these conditions.
- Tipping culture: Not included in the price — a common guideline is $15–20 per person per day for your driver-guide.
- Mobile network & Wi-Fi: Good 4G coverage in nearby towns; signal can be limited inside the reserve.
- Group size & minimum age: This itinerary runs for groups of up to 6 people sharing a private vehicle and is recommended for travelers aged 18+.
- Neutral-coloured clothing in khaki, olive, beige or brown — avoid bright colours and all-black/dark blue.
- Layers — Mara mornings and evenings can be cool, while midday sun is strong.
- Wide-brimmed hat and polarised sunglasses for long hours in an open-roof game-viewing vehicle.
- High-SPF sunscreen and insect repellent (with DEET).
- Comfortable closed walking shoes plus sandals for the camp.
- Binoculars — essential for spotting distant wildlife and birds.
- Camera gear with a zoom lens, spare batteries or a power bank, and memory cards.
- A light rain jacket or poncho, particularly in the March–May or November shoulder seasons.
- Personal medication and a basic first-aid kit, including anti-malarial tablets if prescribed.
- A reusable water bottle — bottled drinking water is provided in the vehicle throughout.
- Small denomination US Dollars or Kenyan Shillings for tips, drinks and curio shopping.
- A universal travel adapter — Kenya uses UK-style (Type G) three-pin plugs.
Peak season (July–October): The classic dry season and the best time to visit the Masai Mara for the Great Wildebeest Migration, when millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River. Game viewing is at its best; early booking is recommended.
Short dry / calving season (late December–February): Dry, sunny weather and predators in hunting mode as calving season further south draws game into the ecosystem. Popular with families over the holidays.
Green / low season (March–May): The long rains bring lush, dramatically green landscapes, fewer tourists and noticeably lower camp rates — the best time for a budget-friendly Masai Mara safari, though some murram roads can get muddy.
Shoulder season (June and November): June offers drying roads and thinning crowds ahead of the July migration rush, while November's short rains bring a similar green, quiet, good-value window before the December peak.
